The Vintage Battle of the Bands is BACK in 2024!
On the first party we have the pleasure to welcome The North Sea Dreammakers! A young, local and eager big band ready to give it all to us!

North Sea Dreammakers is a big band that focuses on the 30’s style of jazz formed in 2024 by Sam Ghezzi, Pablo Castillo and Pepijn Mouwen.
A band based in Amsterdam and composed by an all-star young musicians lineup that strive to give new significance and revive a genre of music that is compatible with the modern times and audience.
Their repertoire is based on transcriptions and adaptations of tunes of the greatest composers of that era (e.g. Duke Ellington in his early years); a whole set of music ready to amuse a varied audience.

Here are the contenders:

First, THE FRIED SEVEN will be back at it again!

Based in Amsterdam, the Fried Seven knows how to make you move! Syncopated, delightful, youthful and virtuous, they work their way through a marvelous repertoire only to make us DANCE. And they come back once again to prove they ARE the hottest band in town.
This septet is united by their passion for early jazz and they make sure that everyone around them can feel it.

And 🥁🥁🥁🥁🥁 on the other side of the ring: THE ROARING CATS!
The battle is ON for a second round!

For those who do not know The Roaring Cats are a promising young band based in Amsterdam with an original repertoire and arrangements from the 30s and 40s. On top of that, they are presenting original compositions in style. Swell notes for hyperactive swing dancers.
The show they put on is a must watch/dance every time they hop on a stage.

Last year, officially we did not pronounce a winner. But this year will be different and both bands are coming to get the prize! 🏆

We will cover four different topics spread out over 3 hours:

Workshop 1: 11.00 – 12.30
1. EMPOWER THE LEADERS BY EMPOWERING THE FOLLOWS
Often follows do not realise how much they can add to the dance and how much freedom they have.
By taking power over that freedom they are allowing the leaders to take a different position in the conversation where leaders can soak in the inspiration given by the follow. Let’s explore this win win approach to the dance.
2. STEP/RHYTHM REPLACEMENT THEORY
Exploring something familiar, but from a different perspective and making it feel totally new and mind blowing, that is what we are gonna do to your moves.

3. SWING OUTS FUNMATICS
Rethinking how we think about a swing out and each small element in it that can open a big door
4. TURNOLOGY
Exploring leader or follow initiated turns

LEVEL REQUIREMENTS
For the first one we need you be familiar with 6 & 8 count basics, and to have done at least a few swing outs even if those are still work in progress.
For the second one we need you to have good understanding of the swing out and to be able to improvise with it.

About the band:
Inspired by the wild hot sounds of 1930s/40s Harlem and Chicago jazz, The Big Five have established themselves as Berlin’s most authentic swing-era combo. Combining a driving rhythm section, a fiery horn-led frontline and dynamic song-arrangements, this international band makes a deep-dive into the lesser-known repertoire of the Swing Golden Age – as well as a strong emphasis on original compositions. Ranging in size from the core quintet to the full septet lineup.
The Big Five are veterans of Berlin’s famed Lindy-hop and Balboa dance-halls and know how to turn a mild-mannered dance party into a raging frenzy of swing-outs. With their sharp attire and an intense passion for authentic swing-era jazz, these cats will certainly make you Jump for Joy!

About the band:
Liquid & bones, a passionate yet quirky blues quartet that plays to make you dance!
Marco (guitar), Collin (drums), Lotte (doublebass) and Loes (singer) joined forces from quite a different background when it comes to their personal gateways into their love for blues music.
Together they form a dynamic quartet that celebrates all that blues can be. From slow and atmospheric to upbeat and goofy. They are inspired by the first recordings of Memphis Minnie, the guitar play by “the Texas razor” Albert Collins, the undeniable Chicago shuffle and the sliding sounds from the Mississippi Delta. They take their own spin and will make it impossible to sit still.

Level descriptions:
Workshop 1
You have been dancing for around 2 years and have been taking weekly classes and you are a regular social dancer OR you have taken our unlimited package of classes with Swing Philosophy for the last 6 months, which means at least 3h of class a week and weekly social dances. You feel comfortable with swing outs, sugar pushes and (tandem) charleston.

Workshop 2
You have been dancing for at least 2 years and you are regular at festivals for the higher levels.
You are considering competing and you don’t shy away from very fast or very slow tempo’s.

More info on the topics of the workshops will follow soon!

The venue will be offering dinner and the bar will be open for drinks, so please make use of it and support the venue so we can keep dancing there!
